The Greater South East Net Zero Hub (GSENZH) is utilizing UrbanTide’s fuel poverty data insights platform, uZero, to roll out critical energy support to thousands of households in the South of England.

GSENZH are the first Net Zero Hub in the UK to be using the innovative AI software, which was developed as part of the UK Research Institute’s Modernising Energy Data Applications (MEDApps) programme.

From June 2023, GSENZH will be using uZero to map and identify fuel-poor households across the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough local authorities. The technology will allow them to efficiently deliver energy efficiency projects using the government’s Home Upgrade Grant, awarded to the local authority in March 2023.

It’s a two-year, £82 million funded project that will see thousands of low-income households benefit from home energy efficiency upgrades and clean heating systems as the UK continues to tackle a national energy crisis.

How the Net Zero Hub is using uZero

uZero is a powerful AI and data insights platform that maps, identifies and predicts fuel poverty. By integrating anonymised real-time smart meter system data with multiple cross-sector datasets, the tool can provide a true and clear understanding of fuel poverty in a particular area.

As Net Zero Hub for the whole Greater South East area of England, GSENZH will be using uZero to track local energy usage data across the entire region. The tool will provide an AI-generated heatmap of household clusters most at risk from fuel poverty, which will allow them to work closely with local authorities and delivery partners to prioritise delivering energy support to the households most in need.

Working in collaboration with the individual local authorities in the GSE region, the Net Zero Hub will use uZero to ensure the government's Home Upgrade Grant is deployed efficiently and effectively, reducing the impact of fuel poverty for thousands of households in England.

What is GSENZH?

The Greater South East Net Zero Hub is a collaboration of 11 Local Enterprise Partners (LEPs). As a collective, the GSENZH aims to accelerate the transition to a net-zero carbon economy in the Greater South East region of England.

By bringing together key stakeholders from various sectors, including government bodies, businesses, academia, and communities, the GSENZH is working towards a shared goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.

What is the HUG?

The Home Upgrade Grant (HUG) is a funding initiative from the UK government aimed at supporting local authorities to improve the energy efficiency of properties in their region. The grant provides financial assistance to undertake energy-saving measures such as insulation, heating system upgrades, and renewable energy installations.

Phase one of the Home Upgrade Grant program was introduced in September 2020 and has already successfully allocated £218m to 42 projects covering over 200 local authority areas. Phase two of the funding (HUG 2) has just been released and will see £700 million allocated over the course of two years.

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough local authority have been allocated £82 million of that funding.
