Kerbside data and breaking down silos: The key to integrating UK transport networks

UrbanTide is working in partnership with AppyWay to develop uMove_Fusion in response to the Government's call to action on integrated transport.

Government plans have been announced to seamlessly integrate the UK’s transport networks, and UrbanTide's new partnership with AppyWay is responding directly to that call.

The Government's aim is to create a system where people can travel around the UK in a healthier, easier, more sustainable, and affordable way. But historically, the UK isn’t set up to support integrated transport. Transportation departments (e.g. those in charge of public transport, active travel, and parking) have traditionally operated independently, with their own data, priorities, and planning processes.

This fragmented approach has created an age-old problem in the transport world. When any of these departments are planning a new project – a new cycle route or where to put an EV charging point, for example – conflicts often occur or opportunities for collaboration are entirely missed because these departments are working in such a disjointed way.

The solution to this problem comes in two key parts: Breaking down transport data silos and bringing kerbside data into the fold.

uMove Fusion: Integrating Appyway’s Kerbside data

Working in partnership with AppyWay, UrbanTide is responding to the government's call to action on integrated transport by breaking down data barrier silos and opening up kerbside data in the UK for the first time.

We’ve developed a data sharing platform - uMove Fusion - that provides a broad spectrum of transport and kerbside data on one single-source data platform, which has never been done before.

By combining data on active travel and public transport with data on legal restrictions at the kerbside (such as parking bays and bus restrictions), uMove Fusion gives transport planners and local authorities a more holistic, transparent view of the road network and competing demands on kerb space.

This allows them to make more informed decisions, coordinate interventions, and bring more schemes to market faster and at lower costs. Overall, the goal is to help drive progress in the mobility sector, whether it's parking, EV charging, or accelerating active travel infrastructure.

Our vision for this project is to showcase how breaking down data silos can benefit the entire integrated transport ecosystem, aligning with the UK government's focus on integrated transport.

AppyWay and uMove Fusion: For a sustainable future

Appyway’s kerbside traffic regulation orders (TRO) system holds detailed insights on parking infrastructure along kerbsides. By combining forces, both systems will evolve to interchange and integrate diverse data sets, fostering a more cohesive and user-friendly approach to mobility data.

This amalgamation streamlines access to comprehensive road network information, saving valuable time and resources. If used ubiquitously in transport planning, this approach to data sharing will accelerate the decision-making process and serve as an evidence base for reallocating more funds towards active travel and decarbonisation initiatives.
