At UrbanTide, we believe that taking care of our environment is not just good business - it's the right thing to do. That's why last week, our team partnered with The Water of Leith Conservation Trust (WOLCT) for a morning of hands-on conservation work that brought us together while making a meaningful difference to one of Edinburgh's most treasured waterways.

About The Water of Leith Conservation Trust
The Water of Leith Conservation Trust, Scotland’s first river charity and guardians of the river, has been working tirelessly since 1988 to protect, conserve, and enhance the Water of Leith and its surrounding environment. This vital waterway flows for twenty four miles from the Pentland Hills through the heart of Edinburgh to the Firth of Forth at Leith, supporting diverse wildlife and providing a green corridor through Scotland's capital city. The river can be explored on foot or by bike along the thirteen mile Water of Leith Walkway.
Our Team in Action
Thirteen members of our UrbanTide team rolled up their sleeves for a fun and productive morning of conservation work along the Water of Leith at the Belford section. Our keen volunteers tackled three key areas that make a real difference to both the environment and the community:
Erosion Prevention: Donning our waders, we planted willow along the waterway to help reduce erosion - a vital conservation activity that protects the riverbank while creating habitat for local wildlife.
Walkway Maintenance: We gave the walkway a thorough trim back and brush off, clearing overgrown vegetation to create more space for users. This essential work ensures that locals and visitors can safely enjoy this beautiful green corridor through Edinburgh.
Graffiti Removal: We remove tagging from the footbridge, helping to restore the natural beauty of the crossing point and maintaining the welcoming atmosphere that makes the Water of Leith such a treasured community space.
Our colleagues demonstrated the same collaborative spirit and attention to detail that we bring to our professional work. It was inspiring to see everyone come together outside of the office environment and make a real difference together.
The numerous passersby who stopped to thank us while we worked highlighted how valued this area is by Edinburgh residents and visitors alike.

Why Corporate Volunteering Matters
This volunteer initiative reflects our broader commitment to corporate social responsibility. By partnering with local conservation organisations like the WOLCT, we're able to:
Make a tangible impact: Contributing to real, measurable improvements in our local ecosystem
Give back to our community: Supporting the local environment that we all enjoy and benefit from
Build stronger teams: Working together on meaningful projects strengthens bonds between colleagues
Live our values: Demonstrating our commitment to sustainability through direct action
The Bigger Picture
The health of urban waterways like the Water of Leith is crucial for biodiversity, flood management, and quality of life in cities. Climate change and urban development present ongoing challenges, making the work of organisations like the WOLCT more important than ever.
As a company whose aim is to help organisations unite data, reduce carbon emissions, develop sustainable transport and decrease energy use, we understand the interconnection between built and natural environments. Our volunteer work with the WOLCT aligns perfectly with our mission to create sustainable, livable urban spaces.
Looking Forward
This volunteer day was just the beginning of our commitment to environmental volunteering. We're already planning future conservation initiatives and looking for new opportunities to support important environmental work throughout the year.
We'd also like to encourage other local businesses to get involved. The WOLCT offers various opportunities for corporate volunteering, from single-day activities to longer-term partnerships. It's a rewarding way to make a positive impact while building stronger, more engaged teams. Plus, it’s not every day you get to wear waders and do work in a river!
