Active travel plays a crucial role in achieving our net zero goals. By promoting walking and cycling, we can significantly reduce transport emissions, which currently account for a fifth of global CO2.
Challenge
SEStran (South East of Scotland Transport Partnership) is currently undergoing £5.3 million worth of projects to facilitate active travel behavioural change across the South East of Scotland.
These projects are entirely funded by Transport Scotland. SEStran needed a powerful data insights platform through which they could track and monitor the delivery and impact of these 100+ projects, so they could report back to Transport Scotland on funding progress in real time.
Approach
UrbanTide is supporting SEStran in its delivery of these projects by providing the People and Places Monitoring Dashboard - a white-labelled version of our data insights platform, uMove.
By feeding vast amounts of active travel data into the dashboard, the tool functions as a single source of truth that provides complete transparency on all ongoing projects as SEStran works towards the objectives of the People and Place Plan. SEStran can easily track and monitor delivery progress in real-time, while promoting full transparency on where funds are being spent and how.
Results
£5.3m
Transport Scotland has invested a total of £5.3 million to fund the delivery of SEStran’s People and Place Plan. These projects seek to raise awareness and increase participation in active travel, as well as building capacity and capability for change.
109
There are over a hundred projects currently monitored through the People and Place Dashboard. These projects are all helping deliver active travel behaviour change interventions, such as the Wee Bike Library, The Bike Station and Women’s Safety in Public Places.

There are currently eighteen different delivery partners working together to facilitate these active travel projects across the South East of Scotland, including Cycling Scotland and The City of Edinburgh Council.
The People and Place Monitoring Dashboard acts as a single source of truth, allowing SEStran to track and monitor the progress and impact of 100+ active travel projects in one place.
Our partnership vision
Our partnership with SEStran is ongoing and we have a number of exciting developments we’ll be adding to the People and Place Monitoring Dashboard in the near future.
For example, we’ll be adding active travel public survey data and will be looking to add collaborations with health boards and other cross-sector organisations to demonstrate the true impact of these projects.
