Innovative smart communities IoT project powered by USMART.
Sharing of real-time IoT data is the holy grail for Smart Communities projects. It maximises the potential of these extremely valuable data sources. The Smartline project is using UrbanTide's USMART Platform to do just that!
November 1, 2017
The project is being led by the University of Exeter in partnership with Coastline Housing, Volunteer Cornwall and Cornwall Council and will collect data from approximately 350 residential homes and its occupants. Data will be collected through a range of digital sensors, provided by Invisible Systems and installed in participating homes by BlueFlame. These sensors will measure a variety of environmental indicators such as air quality, temperature, humidity, water and electricity usage.
Smartline has chosen USMART to power the integration of all of these datasets and enable data sharing and open data publication to support innovation.
From an UrbanTide perspective, this project provides the ideal mix of innovative partners and high quality IoT data we need to illustrate the full functionality of USMART and it's ability to ingest any data type, transform and analyse data, create visualisations. USMART will also share that data with project partners when sensitive or through removing personal and commercially sensitive data as open data to help local businesses develop new technologies and increase job opportunities in the county.
Smartline allows USMART to illustrate its ability to provide value at every step of the data value chain.
“We are very excited to work with UrbanTide on the Smartline project. We chose USMART because of its capabilities to securely store, integrate and share any type of dataset, including real-time data. USMART will act as a central hub, managing all the data assets for the Smartline project.”
— Smartline data integration officer Darren Stevens
In addition to this quantitative data, researchers from the University of Exeter will carry out qualitative surveys to assess the residents’ perceived wellbeing. Together with data collected by Coastline Housing about property types and construction, this will provide important context for the analysis of the sensor data collected by the IoT devices.
Over the next two years, Smartline will collect a wide range of real-time, batch and reference datasets which need to be stored and shared securely with project partners and researchers. Outputs from the project will also be shared as open data to enable innovation on a wider scale.
“We are very excited to explore how IoT sensor data and integrated data analysis can generate new insight for our customers and our business. Using evidence-based decision making has the potential to generate great benefits for both customers and housing providers.”
— Coastline Housing CEO Allister Young
Our CTO Tobi Tonner says "We are proud to support Smartline, a 3 year project funded by the European Union Regional Development Fund in order to help local businesses develop new technologies and increase job opportunities in the county. Additional funding was provided by the South West Academic Health Science Network (SW AHSN).
We are very excited to be part of this fantastic project and look forward to sharing more details over the coming months.
